Changes to the Overview of Toastmasters International Educational System

Some of you may remember that I reported on the changes to the TMI Educational Awards in the October issue of Southern Cross. Well July 2006 is fast approaching and the new system kicks in from that date! So here is a bit more detail on the changes to award and manual names:

New Titles for Communication Track Awards

  • Competent Toastmaster (CTM) becomes Competent Communicator (CC)
  • Advanced Toastmaster Bronze (ATMB) becomes Advanced Communicator Bronze (ACB)
  • Advanced Toastmaster Silver (ATMS) becomes Advanced Communicator (ACS)
  • Advanced Toastmaster Gold (ATMG) becomes Advanced Communicator Gold (ACG)

New Titles for existing Leadership Awards

  • Competent Leader (CL) becomes Advanced Leader Bronze Award (ALB)
  • Current Advanced Leader (AL) becomes Advanced Leader Silver (ALS)
  • New Competent Leader (CL) requires completion of a BRAND NEW Leadership Manual

New Titles for Manuals

  • Communication and Leadership Program manual (C&L) becomes Competent Communication Manual
  • Advanced Communication and Leadership Manuals become the Advanced Communication Manuals

Distinguished Toastmaster (DTM) Requirements

  • To become a Distinguished Toastmaster, a member must have the Advanced Communicator Gold (or current Advanced Toastmaster Gold) AND the Advanced Leader Silver (or current Advanced Leaders) award

The changes may initially seem a bit daunting but generally only constitute a renaming of awards. The biggest change is to the leadership track where a BRAND NEW manual has been introduced (more on that later) and the old CL and AL awards now coming after that.

Although this new program begins in July 1st. 2006 (and members can apply for the new awards from this date), there is a two year grace period. This means that those members who are currently working towards the existing Competent Leader awards will continue to be issued Competent Leader through to June 2008. From 1st. July 2008, only the new requirements will apply.

The TMI website has a comprehensive description of the changes and there have been two very useful articles in the latest issues of The Toastmaster magazine. Clubs and members don’t need to do ANYTHING more than start to be aware of the impending changes. I am more than happy to answer questions so feel free to contact me at any time.
